Dance Class with Culver

Image
Dance Class with Culver Jackie Culver is a jazz dance teacher at the University of Portland known famously for her many quirks and her energetic and fun spirit. To begin class, Jackie Culver unpacks her CD player and sorts through her collection for the day's warm up music. More often than not, she will choose music written, composed and sang by her husband, who she met while attending the University of Portland in their college days.  Often, Culver will bring in artifacts from her dancing days to show her students (or as she calls them, her "pretties"). Pictured is her explaining a college thesis she wrote on the psychological affects of dance.  Jackie has been dancing for about 65 years, though as time went away, so did her hearing. When she cannot hear the music clearly, she will follow the beat by feeling the vibrations of the music through the dance floor.  Jackie has trained in Russian ballet, contemporary, jazz, salsa and many other styles of dance, though h...

Control Found Within Coffee

Image
Every trip to Cathedral starts the same way. This is the beginning moment of control that George seeks within this daily routine. While simple, the ability to be able to drive himself to his preferred destination makes him feel a sense of empowerment .   Coming here, George gets to order what he wants. Him being able to make this decision on what he wants to drink strengthens his confidence in this journey of control  Before enjoying his coffee, George cuts himself off from the outside world by turning his phone off.  This allows him to engage in the present moment to his maximum ability.   George has found reading is one of the best possible ways to practice being in the moment. He makes it his goal to read at least 2 pages from a new book every trip.   Even though George gets the same coffee on every visit, he does appreciate the variation that takes place within the coffee every time he comes. It helps him understand that while being in control is great, some...

Nate Horne and his sustainable closet

Image
Sustainable fashion has become a hot topic within the fashion industry and many consumers are starting to look at how their purchasing habits impact not only the environment but labor workers as well. Fast fashion has the biggest impact on these issues and University of Portland student, Nate Horne, has been changing up his consumer habits by buying second hand and styling  hand-me-downs within his closet. Through thrifting, he has found some of his favorite pieces and finds solace knowing that he is crafting his wardrobe in a more ethical way. Here is an inside look as to what that looks like on a college student budget.  Nate Horne's closet consists mostly of thrifted or gifted pieces because of his belief in sustainable fashion. His aesthetic color scheme is influenced by neutral tones, mainly black, brown, forest green, and tan.  Horne likes to embellish his outfits with small and simplistic jewelry. The green pendant was a gift from a friend. They have matc...
