Lauren Lowrey - Profile of a Practitioner

I first met Lauren Lowrey when I was about 8 years old. Not only was she a close family friend, but was the morning anchor for Toledo, Ohio's main news station at the time. As a kid who had many dreams, one of those dreams at some point was being a broadcaster for some sort of news station. While it's not what I envision on doing now, she is still someone that I have looked up too and enjoyed talking to about her beginnings within the job, and how she's gotten to where she is today.

While talking with Lauren, one of the first things that she made clear was to get involved with some sort of media outlet at your school. She attended Florida State University, and detailed how the connections she made within the broadcasting department within her school helped her to land some of her first jobs out of college. She went into more detail on this topic by talking about how important connections have been for her throughout her time. Not only were they important for the early stages of her career, but they were even essential in landing her current anchor position for Nashville, Tennessee's most popular news station. Following this she talked about how during the early stages of her career she found it key to give everything a try. She detailed how early on she felt like she knew what she wanted to do, but by trying out different areas within her field, she was able to solidify her original choice that she had in the beginning of it all.

After talking about the early stages of her career, along with the different actions she made and attitudes that had, which helped her to be able to grow, she talked about the different parts of her job that she loves. One of the main parts that she has liked about her career in broadcasting is the different places that she has been able to live. Whether it was Myrtle Beach,
Indianapolis, Toledo, or Nashville, she said that getting to be imbedded in differing cultures brought her experiences that she would of never had otherwise. While living in all of these different areas, she also felt that she was able to connect with large crowds of people. Lauren took pride in the fact that there were some people that started their day off by listening to her. After doing this for an extended period of time in the same place, she said she could feel her connection grow between her and the people that were watching through the camera.

Overall, I felt like Lauren was able to provide great perspective on what it takes to be successful in her field. I really appreciated the wisdom and simplicity that she spoken with regarding her career. I think that while I may not be pursuing the same career that she is, that the advice she provided can be applied to other areas of my life that I have a passion for.
