The Daily Challenge of Balancing Health and School

Seth Troyer '22 swipes into the University of Portland Recreation and Wellness center at the early time of 7AM. Troyer finds the gym to be least busy at this time of day, so he drags himself out of bed in hopes of beating the rush.

After using the rowing machine for just shy of 10 minutes, Troyer has exhausted himself and is out of breath from the intense motion. Rowing machines allow for a total body workout and use major muscle groups in your arms and legs along with providing a cardiovascular exercise.

Troyer prioritizes abdominal exercises when at the gym because he recognizes their importance and benefits across all other categories of exercise. Plank, the exercise photographed above, engages all muscles from your neck down to your legs.

In addition to working out in the gym, Troyer also is a member of the Club Basketball team at UP, which offers extensive cardio training and skills practice. The University allows free basketball rentals at the gym, which Troyer takes advantage of to get in a couple of extra shots.

Troyer has created a habit of drinking or eating products with a high protein content after a workout for muscle growth and repair. Premier Protein shakes in combination with whole milk have roughly 30 grams of protein.

Troyer is just a few months away from graduation, majoring in Operations and Technology Management through the Pamplin School of Business. He is currently studying a programming language, Python, and is working in a group project to understand the content better.
